Signals of Change

Imagine a future where all ships are autonomous, how would they communicate with each other?

In the world today, there are 36 signalling flags that are used as a common language between maritime ships. Signals of Change is an artistic installation of a series of speculative maritime signal flags used by autonomous vessels. Each represents a possible scenario in a future of ubiquitous Maritime Autonomous Surface ships (MASS) in our seas.

The Cabinet Office’s Policy Lab is working with the UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s new Maritime Autonomous Regulatory Lab (MARLab) to understand how we can give industry confidence in regulation to encourage innovation in MASS whilst ensuring our seas are clean and safe.
